Project Overview

Client Background

The client is based in Saudi Arabia and originally manufactured traditional cast-iron manhole covers. As local urbanization accelerated, municipal authorities raised requirements for composite building materials — favoring environmental performance, theft resistance and corrosion resistance. The client decided to add a BMC (Bulk Molding Compound) composite manhole cover production line alongside its existing cast-iron products.

Seeking a one-time technology transfer that would deliver equipment, molds, raw materials and formula in a single package, the client compared suppliers and ultimately selected us to provide the complete line solution, including ocean export of all machinery and materials. Production Line Delivered

The complete BMC manhole cover production line is built around the SMC/BMC compression molding process. We supplied the following key equipment and technical support:

• Hydraulic press: compresses BMC dough under high temperature and pressure, providing stable molding force and temperature control;
• BMC kneader: uniformly blends resin, glass fiber, fillers and additives into dough molding compound — the core equipment for recipe consistency;
• Manhole cover molds: custom-built with Middle Eastern pattern designs, suitable for round covers and special-shaped plates;
• Material formulation: a proven BMC cover formula covering resin system, reinforcement fiber, filler ratio and curing process;
• Process training: covering batching, kneading, molding, demolding, trimming and QC, enabling the client to produce independently.

Custom Middle Eastern Molds

For local municipal aesthetics and landscape needs, we built custom molds with Middle Eastern patterns for the client. The cover surface presents refined geometric and floral textures that satisfy both anti-slip load-bearing function and uniform street appearance.

BMC Formulation Transfer

Beyond equipment and molds, a core value of this project was the complete transfer of the BMC material formulation. We adjusted the formula for Saudi climate conditions — high temperature, strong UV and occasional saline-alkali environments — ensuring the covers retain mechanical strength and weather resistance in long-term outdoor use. The base resin used is unsaturated polyester; see Wikipedia: Polyester resin for background.

The formulation system mainly includes:

• Base resin: unsaturated polyester resin, providing flow and cured strength;
• Reinforcement fiber: glass fiber roving / chopped strand, improving flexural and impact strength;
• Functional filler: inorganic fillers such as quartz sand, reducing cost while increasing hardness and heat resistance;
• Low-shrink additive: controls dimensional stability and reduces surface waviness;
• Accelerator and release agent: optimize curing speed and demolding efficiency for batch production.

One-Stop Raw Material Sourcing

To help the client ramp up production immediately, we packed all required raw materials into a single container for unified shipment, including:

• Glass fiber roving
• Unsaturated polyester resin
• Low-shrink additive
• Quartz sand filler
• Curing accelerator
• Release agent

With one-stop sourcing, the client avoids coordinating multiple suppliers, lowering procurement complexity and shipping coordination cost.

Sorted Packing & FCL Shipping

Because the raw materials include both general chemical goods and hazardous goods (such as resin and accelerator), we performed sorted packing per international ocean freight rules: general and hazardous goods are packaged, labeled and reinforced separately to meet export shipping and Saudi customs clearance requirements.

Project Outcomes

• The client expanded from a single cast-iron cover maker into a composite cover manufacturer, successfully upgrading its product line;
• Through technology transfer, the client mastered the full BMC workflow — batching, kneading, molding and QC — gaining independent mass-production capability;
• The custom Middle Eastern-pattern molds meet local municipal landscape and functional standards;
• Equipment, molds, raw materials and formula were delivered in one container, shortening the client’s time-to-production;
• Sorted packing of hazardous and general goods ensured compliant shipping and smooth customs clearance.
